The sami / Samerna

The series is the first major TV presentation of the Sami people from the northern mountains of Europe, their unique culture and remarkable history, scattered with violence and oppression. In the series we show how modern genetic research and archaeology now have discovered remarkable facts, showing that the Samis are one of the last remaining groups of native Europeans. We display the Samis’ almost forgotten mysterious religion and their unique handicraft. We visit desolate remains of settlements, sacrificial sites and stunning ancient rock carvings. We tell of the Samis’ relation to nature and to the reindeers that they heard along snowy mountains.

The Samis today are adapted to modern technology such as computer aided reindeer breeding, helicopters and modern design. Leading Sami artists and writers such as Mari Boine and Nils Aslak Valkeapää reveal the unique Sami heritage, and the fight for Sami rights in the Scandinavian society.

Leading archaeologists as well as scientists in genetics and language from Sweden, Canada, Norway and Finland cross check information and display how Sami history can be dated back five thousand years in Scandinavia.
